• Have a defined, nearly mechanical system that reduces or eliminates the guesswork of when to initiate a trade and how and when to close a trade. These systems typically consist of clearly defined price-action setups, perhaps one or two indicators, a defined price entry point, one or two profit targets, and a fail-safe stop-loss mechanism. In essence, he trades with no emotion so his success is not subject to fear and greed.
• Have systems that trade with the longer term trends. It is much more risky to predict and trade trend reversals than to trade pull-backs of the prevailing trend.
• Have excellent money management systems that minimize drawdown from losing trades so that the profit from winning trades far exceed the losses. All traders experience some losing trades, but the successful trader expects them and manages them knowing the prevailing trend will carry him back to profitability. The unexpected will occur; successful traders are always prepared for it.
• Are knowledgeable about the current fundamentals of currency values. While it is possible to trade purely on technical price and volume action, most successful traders monitor and understand the economic realities that affect the world's currencies.
• Treat Forex trading as a professional business, not a part-time hobby. They "expect to make money," they don't "hope to make money." From our experience, very few "hoping" traders are successful.
• Don't use brokers who operate on the "Metatrader" software platform. The "metatrader" platform enables brokers to manipulate fill prices and synthetically "spike" prices that initiate traders' stop-losses, and it is generally believed in the Forex community that those with this ability use it.
• Know how to account for the insider tactics of the banks, governments, and large institutional traders that put most retail traders at a disadvantage.
